Developed and Tested by SEPIOFIN: A New Mineral-Based Desiccant Technology for High-Humidity Environments. (modified sepiolite desiccant)

Moisture presents a significant challenge in international logistics. Inside sealed shipping containers, fluctuations in temperature and humidity can lead to condensation, commonly referred to as container rain. This phenomenon can result in corrosion, electrical damage, packaging deterioration, and cargo losses during maritime transportation.

Traditional desiccants can control moisture effectively under standard conditions. However, their performance and structural stability often decline as relative humidity increases. SEPIOFIN has developed and tested a Modified Sepiolite Desiccant Matrix specifically designed for demanding high-humidity environments. This innovative technology combines the unique fibrous structure of natural sepiolite with a Solid-State Thermo-Mechanical Integration (Co-Calcination) process. The result is a high-capacity mineral desiccant matrix that enhances moisture adsorption and liquid-retention characteristics.

Performance That Increases with Humidity

One of the most intriguing characteristics of sepiolite is its behavior under increasing relative humidity. Unlike conventional bentonite-based desiccants, which experience limited moisture uptake at higher humidity levels, sepiolite exhibits a significant increase in moisture uptake as relative humidity rises.

Technical evaluations indicate particularly strong moisture uptake behavior in the 60–90%+ RH range, with the material's adsorption capacity increasing considerably under high-humidity conditions.

The Higher the Humidity, the Greater the Moisture Uptake

This unique characteristic makes Modified Sepiolite especially relevant for environments where moisture levels can become extreme. These include:

  • Maritime shipping containers

  • International cargo transportation

  • Warehousing and logistics

  • Industrial packaging

  • Humid and tropical climates

  • Long-distance supply chains

  • Moisture-sensitive industrial goods

For cargo protection, this is crucial. The most challenging conditions often occur precisely when relative humidity is at its highest.

Developed and Tested by SEPIOFIN

SEPIOFIN's Modified Sepiolite Desiccant Matrix is not merely natural sepiolite in its conventional form. The technology was developed using a single-stage Solid-State Thermo-Mechanical Integration (Co-Calcination) process. This process modifies the performance of natural sepiolite while maintaining its naturally occurring fibrous mineral structure.

The resulting material has undergone extensive laboratory-scale R&D, process optimization, and comparative performance evaluation. Testing utilized reference methodologies based on MIL-D-3464E and DIN 55473, under controlled conditions of 23±2°C and 40% relative humidity for 24 hours. The results demonstrate a significant improvement compared to active sepiolite.

Under the tested conditions, Modified Sepiolite achieved an 18.23% H₂O adsorption capacity, compared to 12.10% for active sepiolite. This represents a 50.6% increase in moisture adsorption capacity. The improvement was accompanied by a reduction in both unit weight and unit volume required for the evaluated drying performance:

  • 33.6% reduction in unit weight

  • 33.2% reduction in unit volume

These characteristics can provide significant advantages in packaging, handling, and transportation efficiency.

Modified Sepiolite vs. Silica Gel

Silica gel is one of the most established high-performance desiccant materials available. However, performance is only one aspect of the equation. Cost, raw-material availability, physical stability, and application requirements also matter.

The technical evaluation identifies silica gel as a high-capacity desiccant while noting its substantially higher raw-material cost compared to mineral-based alternatives. SEPIOFIN's Modified Sepiolite Desiccant Matrix is based on naturally occurring sepiolite, creating the potential for a more cost-competitive mineral-based alternative while targeting strong performance in high-humidity environments.

The technical evaluation further indicates that sepiolite's moisture uptake becomes particularly pronounced at high relative humidity, with the material showing a strong increase in adsorption as RH rises.

High-Humidity Performance + Natural Mineral Base + Cost-Competitive Potential

This combination creates an attractive proposition for applications where both performance and economics are critical.

Why Sepiolite?

The fundamental advantage of sepiolite lies in its unique structure. Sepiolite has an acicular, needle-like fibrous morphology, along with a micro-/mesoporous structure and internal channels. This creates a mineral framework capable of interacting with and retaining moisture through its internal pore and channel system.

According to the technical evaluation, this structure becomes particularly effective under high relative humidity, where capillary condensation contributes to increased moisture uptake. Unlike swelling clays, sepiolite provides a rigid, non-swelling mineral framework. This structural characteristic is especially relevant for high-capacity desiccant applications.

Liquid Retention and Structural Stability

High-capacity moisture absorption raises another important question: What happens after the moisture has been absorbed? Some hygroscopic desiccant systems can form a liquid phase under high humidity. If that liquid is not effectively contained, leakage can pose additional risks for cargo and container interiors.

In laboratory testing, SEPIOFIN's Modified Sepiolite maintained its visible granular structure after the adsorption test, with no observable mudding or free-liquid exudation. The technical evaluation attributes this behavior to the rigid fibrous structure and internal pore network of sepiolite, which can retain the liquid phase through capillary forces.

For cargo protection, this means moisture control is not only about how much water a desiccant can absorb, but also about how effectively the absorbed moisture can be retained within the matrix.

Designed for High-Humidity Cargo Protection

Global cargo transportation exposes products to varying climates, temperatures, and humidity levels. A shipment can traverse multiple climatic zones before reaching its destination. This makes high-humidity performance particularly important for international logistics.

SEPIOFIN's technology is therefore focused on the High-Capacity Cargo & Extreme Climate Logistics segment, where moisture protection requirements can extend beyond traditional small-package desiccant applications. Potential application areas include:

  • Maritime Cargo Container Moisture Protection

  • Industrial Packaging

  • Warehousing

  • Global Logistics

  • Moisture-Sensitive Products
